When to call 999

Clinical assessment
Your dentist will carry out a thorough examination to identify the cause of your problem. X-rays may be taken where clinically appropriate.

We will focus on relieving your pain and carrying out the necessary treatment. All options will be discussed and agreed with you beforehand.

Rinse gently with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed. Do not place aspirin directly against the gum.
Knocked-out adult tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown only — never the root. If clean, gently reposition it in the socket. If not, keep it in milk or saline. Seek care within the hour.
Dental abscess
Do not attempt to drain the abscess yourself. Rinse gently with warm salt water and contact us promptly — an abscess requires professional assessment.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the area clean. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth. Avoid hard, sticky, very hot or cold foods.
Chipped or broken tooth
Rinse gently with warm water. Dental wax from a pharmacy can cover sharp edges. Collect any broken pieces.
Bleeding from the mouth
Apply gentle, sustained pressure with clean gauze or cloth. If heavy or following injury, attend A&E.
