Understanding the treatment
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a brand of clear, removable aligners that are custom-made using digital scans of your teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for a prescribed period before being replaced with the next in the series, gradually guiding the teeth towards the planned position.
Because the aligners are transparent and removable, many patients find them a discreet and convenient alternative to fixed braces. However, Invisalign is not suitable for every orthodontic case, and a clinical assessment is essential before any treatment is recommended.

Conditions Invisalign may address
Invisalign may be suitable for mild to moderate cases of:
Crowded teeth
Teeth that overlap or do not have enough room to sit comfortably in line.
Gapped or spaced teeth
Visible spaces between teeth that you would prefer to close.
Overbite / underbite
An imbalance between the upper and lower teeth when biting.
Crossbite
Upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth on one or more sides.

Orthodontic relapse
Movement of teeth following previous orthodontic treatment.
Not all cases are suitable. More complex orthodontic concerns may be better addressed with fixed braces or specialist orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will advise you honestly on whether Invisalign is appropriate for your individual needs.
Your treatment journey
What to expect at each stage
Initial consultation
Your dentist will assess your teeth, gums, and bite, and review your dental and medical history. Photographs and digital scans or impressions are taken. All available options — including alternatives — will be explained before any treatment is agreed.
ClinCheck treatment preview
Using Invisalign's ClinCheck software, a digital preview of your proposed tooth movements is prepared. This is a planning tool and is not a guarantee of the final result.
Custom aligner fabrication
Once your treatment plan is agreed and you have provided written consent, your custom aligners are manufactured and sent to the practice.
Fitting your first aligners
Your dentist will fit your initial aligners and show you how to insert and remove them correctly. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help apply the appropriate forces.
Wearing your aligners
Aligners should be worn for the number of hours per day prescribed by your dentist — typically around 20 to 22 hours — and changed at the intervals advised. Adherence is essential.
Progress appointments
Regular check-up appointments are arranged throughout your treatment to monitor progress and address any concerns.
Refinements (if required)
Some patients require additional aligner series — known as refinements — to achieve the planned outcome.
Retention — protecting your results
Once active treatment is complete, retainers are essential to maintain your tooth positions. Without retainers, teeth can shift back over time.
