What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most commonly composed of hyaluronic acid — a substance that occurs naturally in the body. When injected beneath the skin, they may help to add volume, define contours, or soften the appearance of lines and folds in specific areas of the face.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are not permanent. They are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body over time. The duration of results varies considerably between individuals.
Dermal fillers are distinct from anti-wrinkle injections: they work by adding volume rather than reducing muscle movement. In some cases, a combined approach may be discussed during your consultation.
Regulated treatment
Dermal fillers are prescription-only medicines in the United Kingdom. A full consultation and prescribing assessment is required before any treatment can be offered. All results vary between individuals.

What to expect
Consultation & medical assessment
A detailed consultation reviews your medical history, understands your concerns, and assesses facial anatomy. Photographs may be taken for clinical records with your consent. No treatment takes place at this stage.
Prescription & cooling-off period
Where treatment is appropriate, a prescription is issued by a qualified prescriber. A cooling-off period is offered to allow you to make a fully informed, unpressured decision.
Treatment appointment
The filler is injected using a fine needle or cannula, depending on the area being treated. A topical anaesthetic may be applied. Mild swelling or redness immediately afterwards is common.
Aftercare & review
Written aftercare instructions are provided. A follow-up appointment is recommended to assess your response and discuss whether further treatment is appropriate.
Risks
Risks & realistic expectations
Dermal fillers are medical procedures and carry risks. Possible side effects include redness and swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary lumpiness or asymmetry, infection, allergic reaction, migration of filler over time, and rare but serious complications such as vascular occlusion.
Results are visible relatively quickly, though some initial swelling means the final appearance may not be fully apparent for a week or two. Longevity varies between individuals. Results are not permanent — maintenance treatment may be discussed at review.
Important
Vascular occlusion is a rare but potentially serious complication requiring immediate clinical attention. If you experience sudden severe pain, skin colour changes, or vision disturbances following treatment, you must contact the practice or seek emergency care without delay. Emergency hyaluronidase is held on site.
